What is HUMANS:CONNECTING?
You might have arrived here because you're feeling lonely or disconnected. Maybe your relationships have changed, you don't feel like you belong in the way you once did, or your life looks full but something still feels missing.
These are human experiences. And they can tell us something about the connection we have and the connection we need.
That's where social health comes in.
Social health is about the relationships and connections we have with ourselves, the important humans in our lives and our communities. Just as we can pay attention to our physical and mental health, we can pay attention to our social health.
HUMANS:CONNECTING is an Australian social enterprise focused on social health and meaningful human connection globally.
Founded by former Australian diplomat Phil McAuliffe, we help humans, workplaces, communities and systems understand their social health and take practical action to strengthen meaningful connection.
What is social health?
Your social health is an important part of your overall health and wellbeing, alongside your physical and mental health.
Social scientist and author Kasley Killam defines social health as 'the dimension of well-being that comes from connection and community.'
Like physical and mental health, social health is personal. What you need to feel meaningfully connected will be different from what someone else needs, and it will change as you and your life change.
Relationships evolve. Friendships drift. Families change. We move, change jobs, retire, become parents, separate, come out, experience loss and enter new stages of life. The connection that worked for us before may not be the connection we need now.
There is no single formula for good social health.
At HUMANS:CONNECTING, we help humans understand the connection they have, the connection they need, and what they can choose to do to strengthen it.
What does HUMANS:CONNECTING do?
HUMANS:CONNECTING helps humans, workplaces, communities and systems understand their social health and take practical action to strengthen meaningful connection.
For individuals, we offer the Connection Starter Course, which helps you understand your connection needs and build your own Connection Plan, alongside zero-cost resources and 1:1 mentoring.
For workplaces, we offer Creating Connected Workplaces, developed and delivered with Annecy Behavioral Science Lab, to help organisations understand the conditions that influence meaningful connection at work.
With Inclusee, we deliver Social Health in Retirement Training, helping humans prepare for the social changes that can come with retirement.
We also work through speaking, consulting and advisory work to help organisations, communities and systems better understand loneliness, social health and meaningful connection.
How HUMANS:CONNECTING is a social enterprise
HUMANS:CONNECTING is a social enterprise. We use commercial activity to create social impact.
We generate income by selling our products, services and expertise. This helps HUMANS:CONNECTING operate sustainably, invest in our growth and increase the social impact we can make.
Under our Social Enterprise Framework, at least 55% of HUMANS:CONNECTING's profit has a social impact focus. This includes creating and sharing zero-cost resources, contributing our expertise where it can have social impact, and, as funds become available, supporting the work of others through our Sustainable Connection Grants.
